Why Timing Matters
The college application process spans nearly two years, from the spring of junior year through the spring of senior year. Missing a single deadline — a scholarship application, an early decision cutoff, a financial aid form — can cost you thousands of dollars or your spot at a dream school.
This timeline covers every major milestone. Bookmark it, share it with your parents, and check it monthly.
Junior Year
January – March
- Review PSAT/NMSQT results — identify weak areas for SAT/ACT prep
- Begin SAT/ACT preparation — take a diagnostic test to determine which exam suits you better
- Research colleges — start building a preliminary list of 15-20 schools
- Meet with your school counselor — discuss your course schedule for senior year
April – June
- Take the SAT or ACT for the first time (spring of junior year is ideal)
- Visit campuses — spring break and weekends are perfect for visits
- Attend college fairs — ask specific questions, not generic ones
- Request teacher recommendations — ask teachers who know you well before summer
- Start your Common App essay brainstorm — don't write yet, just collect ideas
July – August
- Narrow your college list to 8-12 schools (2-3 reach, 4-5 match, 2-3 safety)
- Draft your Common App essay — write multiple drafts of different topics
- Retake SAT/ACT if needed (August or September test dates)
- Research scholarships — many have fall deadlines
- Complete your activities list — draft descriptions for all extracurriculars
Senior Year
September
- Finalize your college list and confirm each school's requirements
- Complete the Common App — fill in all sections except essays
- Request transcripts from your school counselor
- Register for fall SAT/ACT if retaking
- Begin supplemental essays — start with your top-choice schools
October
- Submit Early Decision/Early Action applications (most deadlines: Nov 1 or Nov 15)
- Complete the CSS Profile for financial aid (opens October 1)

November
- Early Decision/Early Action deadlines — November 1 and November 15 are most common
- Continue working on Regular Decision essays
- Apply for scholarships — many have November and December deadlines
- Check application portals — make sure all materials have been received

- If admitted ED: withdraw all other applications

January
- Regular Decision deadlines — January 1 and January 15 are most common
- Submit any remaining financial aid forms
- Send mid-year grade reports (your counselor handles this)
February – March
- Continue performing well academically — colleges can rescind offers for grade drops
- Compare financial aid offers as they arrive
- Visit admitted student events at schools that accepted you
April
- Regular Decision results arrive (late March through early April)
- Compare offers carefully — consider fit, cost, and opportunities
- Negotiate financial aid if needed — yes, you can appeal
